Excert from my reflection on last semester's blog project
Reflection on Blogging Project This semester I’ve been assigned to do an interesting project - to set up a blog written in English. The theme of it is not designated, I was only asked to first write a proposal and stick to it while I’m posting in the future. What appeals to me most is that I’m allowed to decide my own topic for the blog, because inspiration comes to me very “randomly,” when I’m writing something relevant to my life or interest, I’m able to come up with lots of ideas; on the other hand, I often have difficulty even think of a draft when a subject that is too general or vague is assigned to me. During the process of this project, I’ve discovered that I’m actually good at making up stories. For instance while posting a review of a film I’ve watched, though I indeed love that film, I find it hard to convince my audiences to watch it too by simply saying “I like the film so much” or “It’s awesome!!” Instead I’d use very descriptive words to introduce the plot or the funny parts in a film. It seems that I’m writing something not genuine, yet they’re truly my opinions. So far, I’m rather satisfied with what I’ve done with the blog. Not only does serve as an avenue for me to express my thoughts, but it also helps me to sharpen my writing skills. And I’m glad I’ve chosen a topic which is already part of my life, so that I could share with other people some of my favourite issues. However if there’s the chance to have another project similar to this, though I do love films, I’d want to write something more unique and creative because there are already too many blogs on the Internet that revolve around the same topic as mine. Even my friends would sometimes post their own film reviews on their blogs. As one of my posts indicates, I may want to share some information about queer hotspots in the local areas, such as featured shops, gay bars, special events taking place in Kaohsiung or Tainan and details like price and environment/experience. I’m believe it’s be a lot of fun and it could provide foreign visitors useful guidance to these mysterious yet attractive sites.
I've got a confession to make, that I have the same social disorder too.
I feel ill at ease whenever I've got to eat out, shop or ask for help when I'm alone. But. . . I don't mind watching a film on my own. In fact I'm quite enjoying it. Because I wanna concentrate on what I'm watching, without being disrupted. That's why I go to cinemas, because when I'm home my mum is always calling my name even if there's nothing urgent. I JUST WANT TO ENJOY MY PASTIME!!
And for a stronger flavour, try this: This one wasn't shown at cinemas in Taiwan, but quite a hit in the US, and I'm definitely introducing it.
[Plot summary from Wikipedia - only the first part to avoid spoiler] Composer Peter Bretter (Jason Segel) has spent five years adoring his girlfriend, television star Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell), despite living completely in her shadow. He even works as the composer for Sarah's CSI-type crime drama, Crime Scene: Scene of the Crime, a job that dramatically underutilizes his talents. Devastated after Sarah unexpectedly breaks up with him, Peter takes an impulsive trip to Hawaii and is confronted by his worst nightmare: Sarah and her new boyfriend, articulate, narcissistic British-rocker, Aldous Snow (Russell Brand).
Although the names of the actors may not be familiar to you, they perform quite brilliant in the film actually. The leading actor, Jason Segel, who also wrote the story, has several frontal naked scenes in the film and he acts very naturally and humorously. (FYI this film is R-rated.) I think it's a kinda reverse, instead of showing female nudity like many other adult comedies do, he does it the other way.
The supporting actor, Russell Brand is another highlight of the film. He plays Sarah Marshall's new boyfriend, who is an attractive, funny and promiscuous British singer, kinda like Brand himself in real life. Oh and he looks so hot in the film except that I hate his hair. The way he talks is sexy too, though his Cockney accent is constantly mocked and joked about in the story. He also stars in Adam Sandler's new film, Bedtime Story, which was released recently.
Behind the get-over-breaking-up theme and running gags, there is also constant sarcasm throughout the storyline. For example, the fictional TV prorgamme in the film is a parody of CSI which is presented in a comical way. Here are the quotes from IMDb: [In the lab] Sarah Marshall: Remember how we thought the killer masturbated before commiting his crimes? Detective Hunter Rush: Yes? Sarah Marshall: Take a look... Detective Hunter Rush: ...Looks like where he's going he'll need to know how to masturbate.
Woooooo it's 2009!! Since both my reading & writing classes (on the 30th & 31st day of December, respectively) are suspended, I've got 5 1/2 days of New Year holiday, lot of gratitude to Diana and Ah-Jiang, xoxo!!
And I've made great use of the time to enjoy. . . no, to research into my blog project topic, films. I've watched up to 5 films a day so far.
Now, what better way to celebrate the brand new start of a year with a few films that suit the merry atmosphere? Here are two recommendations of comedies from what I've watched these days:
For a lighter taste of laughter, take The House Bunny. Starring Anna Faris from the Scary Movie series, the story is about a Playboy bunny being fired because of her age. By accident she takes the job to be a "housemother," supervising and guiding the members of a sorority in UCLA, which is full of socially awkward, nerdy girls initially. To save the sorority from being taken over, she has to help the girls to transforms themselves into sexy and popular chicks in order to attract more members. On the other hand, she also discovers the side of her inner beauty, and. . . spoiler! Oh, why don't you just watch the film yourself, or read the plot on Wikipedia?
What I like: The makeover scene, far more stunning than Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, and it's appropriately accompanied with Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne, as the background music! From this: To this:Anna Faris also shows the audience, both in and out of the story, that she's not a blonde airhead, as her performance being positively praised, breaking her stupid image in Scary Movie. The trailer may make you think it's another silly comedy making fun of the blonde, but it really is something meaningful and inspiring!
